Before you go

Dilwara temples: visitors can enter from about 12 PM to 5 PM. Phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside, and shoulders and knees must be covered. Entry and parking are free; leave phones in the car or pay about ₹50 for the locker.

The hill road: the 28 km climb from Abu Road has many bends. If anyone gets car sick, eat light and sit in front.

Weather: Mount Abu is 8 to 10 degrees cooler than Udaipur. Carry a light jacket from November to February, even in the day.

Your hotel: stay near Nakki Lake so you can walk to the market in the evening. Weekends and holidays fill up early, so book ahead.

Ambaji: the temple is in Gujarat, about 45 km from Abu Road. Darshan closes for breaks during the day, so we time day 2 around it.

Crowds: long weekends, Diwali and summer holidays bring heavy traffic on the hill. Weekdays are much calmer.
