Udaipur to Jaisalmer by road
The first two hours cross the Aravalli hills past Ranakpur. After Pali the land goes flat and dry, and from Jodhpur it is a straight desert highway to Jaisalmer.

After Jodhpur there are long stretches without a good restaurant or washroom. We stop at Jodhpur and Pokhran; tell the driver if you need a halt in between.

Which car should you book?
1 to 3 people with cabin bags: a sedan is the cheapest way to go.
4 adults with big suitcases: take the Ertiga. Four people and four suitcases do not fit in a sedan.
Family of 5–6: the Ertiga, or an Innova Crysta if you want more leg room on a long drive.
8 to 12 people: one Tempo Traveller costs less than two cars and keeps the group together.

Before you go
Start early: leave by 6 AM on the one-day trip. You reach Jaisalmer before sunset, and the desert road is safer in daylight.
Two days is easier: a night in Jodhpur breaks the drive in half and gives you Ranakpur and Mehrangarh on the way.
Hotels inside Jaisalmer fort: cars cannot enter the fort. The driver drops you at the main gate and your hotel sends someone for the bags.
Summer: from April to June the afternoon heat on the desert stretch is severe. Start even earlier and carry water.
