Best Time to Visit Udaipur, Month by Month
The best time to visit Udaipur is October to March, when the days are dry and the evenings by the lake are cool. Many visitors skip the monsoon, when the hills turn green, and that is a season worth knowing about too. Here is what each month is like, with the weather numbers, the festivals and the crowds.

- October to March is the best time to visit Udaipur for sightseeing. It is dry, sunny and 24°C to 34°C by day.
- November to February is the most comfortable stretch, and also the busiest.
- July to September is the monsoon. Green hills, full lakes, fewer people, and some days lost to rain.
- April to June is hot, with May reaching 40°C. Rooms are cheaper and the sights are quiet.
- Festival months: March or April for Gangaur, late December for the Shilpgram Utsav.
01The best time to visit Udaipur, in one paragraph
If you can pick any dates, come between mid-October and early March. The rain is over, the lakes are usually full from the monsoon, and you can be outdoors from morning to night. Within that window, February is the easiest month: warm days, cool nights and thinner crowds than December.
If your dates fall in the rains, don’t cancel. Udaipur in July and August looks nothing like its winter photos, and August is the month we like best ourselves. Only the peak of summer, from late April to mid-June, needs real planning around the heat.
02Udaipur weather, month by month
These are 30-year averages recorded at Udaipur airport by the India Meteorological Department, for 1991 to 2020. A single day can be a few degrees either side.
| Month | Day high | Night low | Rain | How it feels | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24.5°C | 7.6°C | 3 mm | Clear, cold mornings | Sightseeing all day, day trips |
| February | 27.9°C | 10.3°C | 1 mm | Warm days, cool nights | Everything. The easiest month of the year |
| March | 33.6°C | 15.6°C | 2 mm | Warming up fast | Gangaur and the Mewar Festival, Holi |
| April | 37.8°C | 21.1°C | 8 mm | Hot by 11 AM | Early mornings, low room rates |
| May | 40.2°C | 25.8°C | 11 mm | The hottest month | Only if dates are fixed. Plan around the heat |
| June | 37.5°C | 26.4°C | 77 mm | Hot, first rain late in the month | Short trips, pre-monsoon skies |
| July | 32.2°C | 24.9°C | 236 mm | Wettest month, green hills | Monsoon views, Sajjangarh, Badi Lake |
| August | 30.5°C | 23.7°C | 205 mm | Rain most weeks, lakes filling | Hariyali Amavasya, long weekends |
| September | 32.1°C | 22.0°C | 112 mm | Rain easing, humid | Full lakes with fewer people |

03October to March: the main season
This is when most people come, and the weather is the reason. From November to February the days stay under 30°C and it almost never rains. You can walk the old city at noon, sit on a ghat at sunset and take a boat on Lake Pichola without thinking about the sky.
October and November
October is still warm in the afternoon, around 33°C, but the mornings and evenings are pleasant and the hills keep some of their monsoon green. November is the month for long days out, such as Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur or Chittorgarh Fort, where you are out in the open for hours.
December and January
Days are sunny at 24°C to 26°C. Nights are cold, close to 8°C in January, and it feels colder on a scooter or a boat. Carry a jacket for the evening. Winter sunsets are early, so reach Sajjangarh in good time.
February and March
February is warm and clear. It is wedding season, but the tourist spots are less crowded than in December. March heats up quickly, with an average high near 34°C, but it brings Holi and Gangaur, the two most colourful weeks in the old city.
For anyone asking about the best time to visit Udaipur with parents or small children, the answer is mid-November to mid-February. There is the least walking in heat and the fewest weather surprises.
04April to June: hot, quiet and cheaper
Summer in Udaipur is dry heat. April averages 38°C by day and May about 40°C, with some days going higher. Nights in May stay near 26°C. The lakes are usually at their lowest of the year by June.
You can still have a good trip if you change the shape of the day:
- Be out from 6 AM to 10:30 AM. A Fateh Sagar morning ride works well in summer.
- Keep City Palace and the museums for the middle of the day. They are mostly indoors and shaded.
- Go back out after 5:30 PM for the ghats and a boat ride. Boats run until it gets dark, between 6 and 7 PM.
- Choose an AC cab over a two-wheeler for anything longer than a short hop.
Late June is a turning point. The first showers arrive, the afternoons cool a little and the clouds build up, though it stays humid.

05July to September: Udaipur in the monsoon
Udaipur gets about four-fifths of its year’s rain in three months. July brings around 236 mm and August around 205 mm, spread over nine or ten rainy days each. The rest of the time it is cloudy and breezy, with highs of 30°C to 32°C.
What changes is the colour. The Aravalli hills go from brown to deep green within a couple of weeks, and the lakes rise through August. Badi Lake, the road up to Sajjangarh and the drive to Jaisamand Lake are at their best now.
Our favourite month is August
If you ask us, the best month here is August. A rainy day off usually goes like this. We take the car out on Rani Road towards Badi Lake, which stays almost empty, and make it a long drive. Then we come back by Fateh Sagar and follow the road behind Lake Pichola down to Doodh Talai. From there the ropeway goes up to Karni Mata, and you get the whole of Udaipur under cloud.
What can go wrong:
- A heavy spell can last a full day. Keep one spare day in your plan.
- Boat rides are stopped when the wind or rain picks up.
- Hill roads get slippery. If you are not a confident rider, take a cab with a driver on wet days.
- Views from Sajjangarh can vanish into cloud, which some people love and some don’t.
Rayta Hills in the rains
Rayta Hills, about 20 km from the city past Kodiyat village, is the best green view near Udaipur in the monsoon. It only became a known spot in the last few years, and most of the crowd is local. On rainy weekends it now gets as packed as a hill station in Uttarakhand or Himachal.
- Two cars can pass on the road, but it is a hill road with steep climbs. When the traffic is heavy, cars crawl up in a line.
- Going by car can be a real problem on a busy day, more so for a new driver. Stopping and starting on a wet slope takes practice.
- Check live traffic on Google Maps before you leave, and go early on a weekday if you can.
- A geared bike handles the climb better than a car. We would avoid taking a scooty up here in the rains.
- There are no shops or water at the top, so carry your own.
September is the month people overlook. The rain eases to about 112 mm, the lakes are usually at their fullest and the winter crowd has not arrived.
06Festivals in Udaipur, by month
Most festivals follow the Hindu calendar, so the dates move every year. Check the exact dates before you book.
| When | Festival | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| February | Udaipur World Music Festival | Three days of concerts by Indian and international artists at open-air stages in the city |
| March | Holi | Holika Dahan the evening before. On Dhulandi, the colour day, the big gathering is at Jagdish Chowk from about 9 AM, and it gets very crowded |
| March or April | Gangaur and the Mewar Festival | Processions carry the idols of Isar and Gangaur to Gangaur Ghat, followed by a boat procession on Lake Pichola, folk performances and fireworks |
| July or August | Hariyali Amavasya | A two-day monsoon fair around Saheliyon ki Bari and Fateh Sagar. The second day is for women and children only |
| October or November | Diwali | The old city, the ghats and the markets are lit up for about a week |
| 21 to 30 December | Shilpgram Utsav | A ten-day crafts and folk arts fair at Shilpgram, about 3 km west of the city, run by the West Zone Cultural Centre |
On Holi and other festival days, traffic around Jagdish Chowk and Gangaur Ghat is managed by the size of the crowd, so the plan changes from year to year. Check the arrangements for that day before you set out, and expect to walk the last stretch.

07Crowds and prices through the year
Weather and crowds move together here. The better the weather, the more you pay and the earlier you need to book.
| Period | Crowds | Rooms and transport |
|---|---|---|
| Diwali week, and 20 December to 2 January | Highest of the year | Book weeks ahead. Prices are at their peak |
| November to February, other dates | Busy, more so on weekends | Book a few days ahead |
| March and October | Moderate | Usually easy to find |
| July to September | Quiet on weekdays, busy on long weekends | Easy, except around 15 August |
| April to June | Lowest | Easy, and the cheapest of the year |
Winter is also wedding season in Udaipur, so some hotels are booked out in full on certain dates. Google searches for taxis in Udaipur follow the same curve: highest in November and December, lowest in April and May. If you are coming in peak weeks, arrange your cab in Udaipur before you land.
We have not printed room or cab prices here because they change by date. The pattern above is what stays the same from year to year.
08Which month suits your trip
| You are | Come in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first-time visitor | November or February | Reliable weather and every sight open all day |
| A couple or on honeymoon | December to February, or August | Cool lake evenings in winter, green hills and mist in the rains |
| A family with children or elders | Mid-November to mid-February | Least heat, least rain |
| On a tight budget | April, June or September | Lower room rates and no queues |
| A photographer | August and September | Green hills, full lakes and big skies |
| Here for culture | March or April, or late December | Gangaur and the Mewar Festival, or the Shilpgram Utsav |
| Planning a road trip by bike | October to February | Dry roads and cool air for long rides |
So the best time to visit Udaipur depends on what you want from it. For comfort, pick winter. For colour and quiet, pick the rains. Once your dates are fixed, see our Udaipur itinerary for what to see each day, and how to get around the city so the days run smoothly.
