Fateh Sagar and Saheliyon ki Bari: A Morning Ride with Timings and Tickets
Udaipur’s easiest ride, and the one we suggest for your first morning: an empty lakeside road, chai on Rani Road, and the marble garden of the maidens as its gates open.

- Start at Fateh Sagar before 8 AM. The lakeside road stays quiet until about 9.

- The loop is about 12 km from the old city, flat all the way. Any scooty will do.

03The route, stop by stop
- Lal Ghat
- Fateh Sagar pal
- Rani Road
- Saheliyon ki Bari
Ride out from the old city through Chandpole and up to the lake. It takes about 15 minutes, and the traffic is light this early. The times below are how long to spend at each stop.
- Fateh Sagar palThe stone embankment on the east side of the lake. Ride it slowly, then park at one end and walk. Before 9 AM it belongs to walkers and chai stalls, and on a still morning the hills sit upside down in the water.
- Rani RoadThe road along the far shore of the lake. In the evening it is packed with food carts and families. In the morning it is almost empty, so you can stop wherever you like for a cup of chai.
- Saheliyon ki BariAbout a kilometre from the lake. Plan to arrive at 9 AM, when the gate opens and before the tour buses. Give it 45 minutes to an hour.
- Back to the old cityAbout 4 km. You are back in time for a late breakfast, before the heat.
04Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar is the lake locals use. Lake Pichola is the postcard; Fateh Sagar is where Udaipur goes for a walk, a cup of tea or a boat ride on a Sunday. It was first built in the 1680s, washed away by floods and rebuilt by Maharana Fateh Singh in the 1880s, which is where the name comes from.
The boats leave from the pal and go to Nehru Garden, the island in the middle. If you want a boat ride, it is a calmer choice in the morning than at sunset, when the queue is long.
Don’t stop on the pal road itself. Pull into the parking at either end, where the other scooters are, and walk the stretch.
05Saheliyon ki Bari, the Garden of the Maidens

Saheliyon ki Bari was laid out in the 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh II as a garden for the women of the royal household. It is small, so you won’t need a guide. Walk through it slowly.
- The fountains run on water from Fateh Sagar. They were built to work by gravity, with no pumps.
- The lotus pool has marble elephants around it and a pavilion in the middle.
- The bird fountain has water coming out of the beaks of stone birds. It is the one everyone photographs.
- Light: the white marble looks best in soft morning light, which is another reason to come at opening time.
There is parking at the gate. On weekends and holidays it fills up by mid-morning, which is one more reason to be early.
06If you have more time
- Neemach Mata temple sits on the hill on the west side of Fateh Sagar. The walk up is steep and takes 20 to 30 minutes, and you get the widest view of the lake from the top.
- Badi Lake is another 10 km out of town on an open road. Join it to this ride if you’re out early. See our Badi Lake guide.
- Coming back in the evening? Sunset at Fateh Sagar is lively, but for the best evening in Udaipur, see our old city evening guide.
07Which scooty for this ride
Any scooty does this ride. The roads are flat and the distances short. If you have never ridden in India, take a Honda Activa or TVS Jupiter: they are light, easy to balance and forgiving in slow traffic. With two riders, the same scooties are fine here.
See our scooties, prices and what’s included on the scooty on rent in Udaipur page. We deliver to your hotel the evening before, so you can leave at 7 AM.
